Why Midlife Friendships Matter (And Why You Need Women Who Get It)
I’ll be honest, making friends as an adult is tough. When we were younger, friendships just happened naturally through school, sports, or those endless playdates. Now, between work, family, and trying to keep track of what day it is, friendships often slip quietly to the bottom of the list. And even though we’re more connected than ever, it’s surprisingly easy to feel totally alone.
And yet, this season is exactly when we need friends the most.
Midlife Is a Beautiful, Baffling Mess
Our bodies are changing, hormones are throwing surprise parties, and emotions show up uninvited. One day you feel on top of the world, the next you’re crying because, well, you aren’t even sure why! It’s a season that can feel isolating unless you have women around you who get it.
Making Friends as an Adult Isn’t Easy
Here’s the thing no one warns us about: building new friendships after 40 takes effort. People are busy, guarded, and sometimes stuck in their routines. It can feel awkward, even intimidating. But it’s worth it. Because when you find those people, the ones who don’t need a long explanation when you text “It’s one of those days”, it changes everything.
Friendship Is Medicine
Research consistently shows that strong social connections lower stress, improve mood, and boost overall health as we age. But beyond the science, there’s something powerful about having a friend who will laugh with you about chin hair, hot flashes, and memory lapses. Someone who reminds you you’re not alone in the weird, wonderful chaos of this season.
Find the Women Who Get It
It might mean stepping out of your comfort zone by joining a new group, saying yes to an invite, or even reconnecting with an old acquaintance. Not every friendship will stick, and that’s okay. The goal isn’t quantity, it’s finding those few who truly see you, hear you, and meet you right where you are.
